July is prime time for grilling out. The weather is perfect and sitting outside to enjoy a just-off-of-the-grill meal is one of summertime’s gifts. Keep your outdoor dining simple and hassle free with these tips for a perfect cookout:

Have a gas grill? Make sure there’s propane in the tank! There’s nothing worse than getting ready for delicious steak and discovering that the tank is empty.

Leave time for the grill to preheat. Just like an oven, the grill needs to get up to temperature or your food will take longer to cook and won’t have those beautiful grill marks on it

Prior to cooking, clean the grill grates and oil them to avoid sticking.

Once you place food on the grill, don’t move it around! That keeps the perfect grill marks from appearing–and can make your food cook unevenly.

Experiment! Sure, we all know that steak, hamburgers, and hot dogs are great on the grill. But so are pineapple slices, asparagus, and other foods you might not have grilled before. Now’s the time to give it a try!

Always use an instant-read thermometer to be sure that food is cooked to the proper temperature. Take into account that the food will continue to cook for a short time after it’s removed from the grill.
